It all started in 2003 when I went to Appalachian Outfitters to buy a sleeping bag.  I was lost in the store and asked for help, little did I know that the guy helping me was Bob (the then Owner).  If you don’t know Bob, he is the best sales person in the world.  I walked out with a complete set of backpacking gear.  Bob showed me pictures from North Fork and I got hooked before I even took one step on a trail.  I was looking for a new adventures and Backpacking fit the bill.

I have gone solo and with a group and I figured that I prefer going with a group.   After looking for clubs/organizations/group that I could join in Northeast Ohio, I came up with nothing so I decided to start one. My goal was to create a web site where members can schedule trips and other members can join, and exchange backpacking tips/trails etc.  So far our community has grown way beyond my expectations, and I made lots of very good friends.

My favorite "Local" trips so far are North Fork, and Mount Rogers. My Favorite in the west is Wind River Range in Wyoming.

I would love to hear from any one that has any ideas for improvements.  All you day hikers that want to take the leap into Backpacking don't hesitate to call on me.

When I'm not backpacking or kayaking I am a Computer Consultant, I work in the yard (lately my tool of choice has been Roundup), and Spend some time on this web site.  Meet me at the trail head for a good hike and lets get to know each other around the camp fire.

I mainly do weekend backpacking/camping, but even find that hard to do between family and work.  I've spent more time car camping with the family recently, but looking to get out backpacking more this year.

Most enjoyable place found so far has been North Manitou Island in Lake Michigan; however Kentucky has some nice scenery.

I'm relatively new to backpacking, always been a fan of the outdoors but didn't get serious about it until a short stint (650 miles) on the A.T. in '04. Now....I backpack like its my job, averaging @ 500 miles a year. Most recent trips include a long section on the C.D.T. and a two day hike on PA.'s Black Forest Trail. I'm new to this club and looking forward to see what it's all about!

I've been weekend backpacking for a few years now, a couple of times a year.  I use a hammock, Vibram FiveFingers KSO Treks (preferably; it depends), and cook real food over a BushBuddy wood stove.

My other interests are designer board games, reading novels, watching quality TV and anime, rock climbing, day hiking, and geeking out on my computer.

. I like to hike, bike, climb, and kayak. You name it, I'll try it. I'm good at a lot of things but an expert at none! I've climbed the Grand Teton(guided), Mt. Washington, Mt. Adams, Mt. Jefferson, Katahdin, and various other smaller mountains. I've hiked in the Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, Yosemite, Acadia, Zion, Bryce and parts of the Appalachian, and Buckeye Trails. I love to get out and use the towpath trail in the CVNP. I would like to find a group to do weekend trips with, as well as a week long trip once a year. I'd really like to do more mountaineering, and alpine stuff out West.

I enjoy everything involving the outdoors. I consistantly mountain bike, rock climb, dayhike, and geocache. I also enjoy white water rafting, canoeing, fishing, snorkling, kayaking, backpacking, and just existing in perfect harmony in the outdoors. My friends and I try to do this stuff as much as we can.
I hike constantly in Cuyahoga Valley N.P. and the local metroparks. Some more memorable dayhikes have been in places like Arizona, Utah, Colorado, and Hawaii. I have hiked the Buckskin Gulch slot canyon in Arizona and the Kalalau Trail of the Na Pali coast in Hawaii. Both of these hikes are in the top ten hikes in the world as rated by Adventure Magazine.

This is long and boring, but I thought it a good exercise for myself:
I have spent my entire life playing in the woods. My first trip was at three months old: my mother carried me through the trails of Cook Forest. We spent nearly every other weekend there during the summers of my childhood. When not in PA I was playing along the Pymatuning Creek and the Shenango Wetlands. My first experiences backpacking were at age 17 when my friends and I would go on survival weekends into those same woods: I have eaten all sorts of creature. Since the birth of my first child, I have given up hunting completely, though. Throughout my 20’s I continued to car camp occasionally with my then wife. A divorce, a child, and a remarriage, my current wife and I began vacationing in that childhood second home Cook Forest. My father had long since sold his cottage but we were able to rent the same cabins that my grandparents took us to for two weeks every year. During this time I was learning to sail, hence the screen name, and became quite successful racing regionally with a team: we managed several Class and Overall awards on Lake Erie. We purchased a membership at a club on our local lake and continue to sail/race and camp there. When our fifth child was born we decided to begin vacationing in Michigan, the childhood home of my wife. The beaches are fantastic, and the state is plastered with campgrounds and over 10,400 lakes. While at Miners Beach on Lake Superior I saw several Sea Kayakers exploring places that I wanted to go, but could not get to on foot. On the drive home we picked up brochures from several kayak manufactures and by the end of the week we purchased kayaks. For several years we kayaked regularly, both lakes and rivers across four states. However, we were still avid day hikers, and I still had two external frame packs in the garage. One of our day hikes led us to Oil Creek State Park. The brochure convinced us that we could try backpacking without b

I love being in the great outdoors surrounded by nature ... the further away from civilization the better. Been backpacking only a couple of years but am crazy about it .. first trip was 12 miles on the Laurel highlands and many more trips there afterwords, then Raccoon Creek, John P Saylor and Turkeyfoot trails near Winber Pa, Smokey Mountains, Dolly Sods, Otter Creek Wilderness .. I backpacked 6 nights in the Beartooth Mountains in Montana last August .. first time backpacking out west! I like to do 8 miles or more per day but will also do less .. I appreciate the company of those who share a love of nature, backpacking, the physical challenge of it and adventurous spirits. I have had the good fortune of backpacking with a few current members here before I joined and I look forward to future trips ..

Hi,

Still a bit of a rookie when it comes to backpacking. My wife and I did hike about 400 miles from Springer Mountain to Damascus, VA earlier this Spring. I'm a college student and looking for some people to explore the outdoors with (my wife's looking to get me out of the house). I'm no expert and am really trying to expand my fieldcraft. I'm trying to get into the light to ultralight side of backpacking. Our pack weight on the AT was about 35 lbs a piece and I want to get that down to 20.

I live in Northern Ohio and I love being outdoors. I'm usually on the water in my kayak and the only trails I've been on involve my mountain bike but I have yearning for backpacking. I'm hoping to find some new friends who don't mind an apprentice tagging along on some adventures.
