Tracy Ridge Extended |
Great hike for this time of year. The trees were about one week past peak but still very nice.
You can view my pictures from the trip at http://picasaweb.google.com/plcampbell11850/TracyRidge09#. You also can view Keira's pics at http://picasaweb.google.com/Keira.Ravendancer/TracyRidgeOct2009?authkey=Gv1sRgCOv-reDrmurjnQE#.
We hit the trail at 11:30am as planned. On our 1st day we hiked two small detours hoping to find the vista's that were described on the maps. Nothing to great other then many trees with beautiful colors. It rained for over half of the 1st days hike. We hiked 8.3 miles and putting us at camp by 4 pm. The 1st night was wet but with the tarp that Brownie brought it was nice for dinner. We went to bed early and it rained all night long. Not too cold. Maybe it went down to the low 40's.
The 2nd day was on the North Conntry Trail. We were up by 7 am moving kind of slow and taking pictures. Had breakfast under the tarp even though the rain had stopped. Hit the trail by 9:30 am. We took many breaks to enjoy the beauty and take more pictures. Brownie's GPS showed that his top speed was over 21 MPH. But that was as he chased it down the side of a hill. We arrived at Handsome Lake camp ground around 12:30pm only to find hunters at one end of it. We considered moving on to the next campground but made the decision to have lunch and think about it. After lunch we decided to see just how big the campground really was. As we investigated further we realized we could go to the other end and wouldn't see or hear them at all. We set up camp and gathered firewood. The wind began to blow off the lake and the temp started to drop. Even with the fire we were all getting cold and ended up calling it a night at around 7:30 pm. It was much colder that night possible down to the lower 30's but everyone was prepared and stayed warm.
The 3d day up at around 7 am moving kind of slow again and taking pictures. It was a beautiful dry and sunny day. We were packed up by 9:30 and hit the trail. We hiked out on Johnnycake with many stops and of course more pictures. We were at the cars by Noon. Hit the road and headed home.
All and all it was a wonderful trip with some very nice backpackers. Thanks to all.
